Last week, Duke University faculty partnered with the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) for a week-long virtual seminar supporting KSE’s new Urban Studies graduate program. The focus of the school’s new program is on strategies for redevelopment and recovery of war-ravaged and declining cities and was born out of the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. Duke faculty from Trinity School of Arts and Sciences, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Center for Slavic and East European Studies, the School of Medicine and the Institute for Brain Sciences participated in the seminar.
The Duke Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies (CSEEES) provided administrative support in order for the Zoom seminar to take place over the four days of 18 different lectures. CSEEES is providing certificates for all of the KSE participants.

Each day focused on specific themes or topics including the use of nighttime satellite imaging of cities to better understand the impact of war and conflict, and the assessment of how war affects the local environment. Roughly 30 students participated in the seminar.
“In partnering with KSE, Duke faculty, students and alumni have shown their commitment to supporting academic and research institutions in Ukraine as well as other regions disrupted by violence,” said Eve Duffy, Associate Vice Provost for Global Affairs.
Duke faculty hope that this partnership will encourage additional avenues for future cooperation between the two schools.
